Current sensor stopped working

I have a couple of Multiplex current sensors, part no #8 5404 and #8 5403, both died suddenly, no data transmitted and aren't seen by either Launcher or the hand held programmer. I have taken the covering off and can't see any "burnt" electronics, before I throw them away does anybody have any suggestions. Thanks.

They are both 5 years or so old. So out of warranty. But this just stopped working between uses so i wondered if there was a way to check them somehow.

Hi Frank,
i have in Mind that can be a Voltage Problem in your installation. How is your Voltageconcept in your Modell.
Have you an electronic concept like BEC or SBEC or have you a Accumulator?

Sometimes the BEC or SBEC can produce High Spikes (Drops) of Voltages which can destroy some Voltageregulator on the Sensors.

Thanks, one unit was in a conventional electric model monitoring the current to the ESC which also supplied the receiver via the SBEC circuit, it was a 3s LIpo, with a max current of just under 30amps. The other was used to monitor the current on an onboard glow system on a Laser V Twin glow engine from a 2v accumulator with around 1.5A current, with the receiver fed from a 4 cell Nimh battery so voltage spikes are unlikely in this case.

I have another couple of Multiplex current sensors, plus some voltage sensors and varios which are performing fine, as are the 4 SM Modelbau Unisens E sensors I use.

Just strange that I've had two MPX current sensors fail.

Yes, you right it is strange.

I suggest some ESD Effects who destroyed some cicurits on the sensor.
An other rootcause can be a thermal distruction without visible defects after some workingtime of the sensor.
Are you sure that the Reset switch is working fine? LED is working? Cable ok?

They are both completely dead, no LED, no display on the transmitter and they won't connect to the PC (Launcher) or the hand held programmer.

This is no result of ESD effekts or voltage spikes, the only way the sensors could be easilie destroyed is if you disconnect the minius power supply whilst the plus power supply is still connected.
In this case the current could run a bypass over the minus line of the servo lead, which is cause a fault at the sensor.
Normally this could only happen if you have installed it otherwise than recommened in the user manual

did You already try to run the sensors on an other receiver and/or the "Launcher"? Just to see if it is really a sensor issue.

Yes, they won't speak to Launcher or the hand held programmer, other sensors are all fine.

Ein klein wenig muß ich Dir widersprechen ; ich hatte ein ähnliches mit dem 35 A Stromsensor vor einiger Zeit ! So angeklemmt wie es in deiner Zeichnung steht und trotzdem stieg im Moment des anklemmen des Akkus mit MPX Stecker Rauch auf ; also ruckzuck wieder abgeklemmt ! Und dann Ursachenforschung betrieben . Im Moment des anklemmens war der Pluspol des MPX Steckers einen Moment eher verbunden als der Minuspol und deswegen ist der Strom über das Minuskabel des Sensors geflossen ! Nach der Reparatur des schwarzen Kabels vom JR Stecker zur Platine des Sensors die Funktion getested und alles in Odnung !!!! Es kann nur im Moment des ansteckens des Akkus passiert sein was eigentlich unmöglich schien bei der Bauart des MPX Steckers das der dünne schwarze Draht des Sensors so warm wurde das die Isolierung verschmurgelt ist !! Bei alten MPX Steckern kann das passieren ; ich selbst war genau wie die Kollegen sehr überrascht und habe danach immer genau drauf geachtet das beim Zusammmen stecken der MPX Akku Stecker immer zuerst den Minuspol verbunden hat !!!! Habe ich auch in meinen Beiträgen geschrieben und der Sensor werkelt immer noch !!!

One of my sensors has the MPX plugs on them and was used just like fig 4b shown in the post by Andreas, much the same as my other MPX and Unisens E sensors which are still working fine. It was working but when I went to move it into another model it stopped (but another sensor is fine in that model).

The other sensor is used to monitor the current in a remote glow system, the circuit is basically, +ve from 2v battery to glow plugs, then too MPX sensor, then to Rx operated FET switch (driven off throttle stick position) then manual switch and back to -ve on the 2v accumulator, Rx is driven by it's own 4.8v battery, this had worked fine but on getting the model ready for this season the sensor no longer responds, the address lines are empty on the transmitter (Profi) and it's not recognised by launcher or the hand held programmer.

I've never witnessed any magic smoke escaping for either sensor and there are no signs of any damage on the circuit boards, I guess I have been unlucky.

es ist einfach so, der Sensor geht nicht so einfach von selbst kaputt, es gibt das Thema mit dem Massestrom über die Minusleitung des Empfängerkabels.
Wenn man einen M6 Stecker ranmacht, kann nichts passieren, es sei denn folgender Fall tritt ein:

Der Sensor ist mit M6 Stecker mit dem Regler verbunden und Sitz zwischen Regler und Akku. Zieht man nun den Akku ab, und der Sensor bleibt versehentlich am Akku stecken (statt am Regler wo er hingehört) und die Plus Leitung bleibt länger als die Minusleitung mit dem Regler verbunden, dann kann der Strom vom Akku über die Minusleitung des Servokabels und die noch bestehende Plusleitung des Reglers einen Stromkreis bilden und weiterfliessen. Je nach aktuelle Strom-Belastung kann dann auf dem Sensor eine Mess/Schutzbeschaltung zerstört werden.
Dafür ist der Sensor nicht ausgelegt.
Dieser Fall tritt aber nicht ein, wenn man sorge trägt, dass der Sensor immer Fest mit dem Regler verbunden bleibt, wenn man den Akku abzieht.

So sah mein Sensor aus ; allerdings nach dem ranmachen an den Akku , nur das dünne (oder nur die Isolierung) Sensorkabel hat es nicht überlebt ! Wie ich oben schon erwähnte ; es kann nur so sein wie Du und ich es schon vermutet hatten ! Das Signalkabel und der Mpx Stecker waren schon verbunden mit Empfänger und Regler , hätte ich das Signalkabel erst nach dem verbinden des Akkus in die Verlängerung des Signalkabels das zum Empfänger führt eingesteckt wäre das allerdings nicht passiert , denke ich , so wie Du es auch schreibst ! Nachdem ich das Kabel repariert hatte hat der Sensor wieder tadellos funktioniert !!
Nach diesem Ereignis habe ich dann immer drauf geachtet das beim zusammenstecken der Akku Stecker der Minus zuerst Kontakt hatte ( Akku und Sensoreinheit) Sicherer wäre es wenn man die Verbindung des Signalkabels erst nachdem zusammenstecken der Einheit mit dem Akku herstellt ! Bei FrankS ist so wie er schreibt ja kein Rauch aufgestiegen oder er hat es nicht mitbekommen !

Du hast nicht genau gelesen was ich geschrieben habe.

Das kann nur passieren, wenn man den Akku abzieht / ansteckt, und der Sensor dabei versehentlich mit dem Akku noch verbunden (also am Akku angesteckt) ist.
In der Regel steckt man den Akku auf den Sensor und da kann absolut nichts passieren.

Bei mir war der Sensor (also die komplette Einheit ) immer direkt mit dem Regler verbunden und der Akku kam als letztes an die Stecker der Einheit !!
